A bill that would raise the age of consent passes in the Oklahoma House.
Yesterday, the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed House Bill 1003 on a unanimous 91 to zero vote. The bill would raise the age of consent in Oklahoma to 18 years of age. The current age of consent in the state is 16 years old.
The author of the bill, Republican Jim Olsen of Roland, stated that the measure ensures that state laws reflect the maturity and well-being of Oklahoma youth as well as upholding the beliefs and morals of the majority of Oklahomans.
The bill passed the House with an emergency clause, meaning that it would go into effect as soon as it is signed by the Governor.
The bill now moves on to the Oklahoma Senate for further consideration.
