The Independence Fire Department responds to several fires during the recent high winds with help from Independence Police officers.
With the extreme wind conditions across the region on Friday, area firefighters were very busy. The Independence Police Department responded to a structure fire at 12th and Beech Streets on Friday and then quickly moved on to another fire report on Rainbow Drive in the Country Club area. Grass fires are especially dangerous in high winds because they can spread very quickly and become a threat to structures and people.
When police officers arrived on the scene, they found a grass fire along a tree line that was very close to nearby homes. They attacked to fire quickly along with help from some nearby citizens. They were able to contain and extinguish the fires before they got out of control.
Later that Friday afternoon, officers from the Independence Police Department responded to another grass fire in the 900 block of East Poplar because fire crews were busy on other calls. Officers were able to put out the fire before fire trucks arrived.
