Residents in Altamont soon will see an increase in their sewer rates.
The Altamont City Council voted for the two-stage rate increase at their most recent meeting. City Manager LeeAnn Myers told council members that, in order to qualify for grants that would help pay for some much-needed repairs to their existing sewer system, rates would need to go up. Myers says it's been more than a decade since the city has raised rates.
Current residential rates for Altamont are around $26. Myers stated that rates would have to go up considerably to meet current needs. Council member Lyle Sykes says it's a step the city needs to take.
Council members voted unanimously in favor of the measure. Rates for residential customers will go up to $35 on April 1st and then rise again to $45 on October 1st.
