The Parsons Police Department assesses its response to a weekend train derailment.
Six train cars derailed in Parsons last weekend. Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks told the City Commission at their most recent meeting, that his officers responded well to the situation. Spinks says several of the damaged cars contained hazardous materials.
No hazardous materials were spilled in the accident and hazmat crews from Union Pacific were called to the scene. Spinks says U-P has offered to help with officer training in dealing with hazardous materials.
In other business at this week's meeting, commissioners announced that the bid process for mowing at the city's cemeteries and on other city properties will soon be open. Those wishing to bid on the jobs should contact the City of Parsons.
