Independence Community College honors three individuals with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major for Justice Award.
The award recognizes individuals who consistently demonstrate a commitment to serving others and making a positive impact in the community. Each year, ICC presents the award to one faculty member, one community member, and one student.
This year's faculty member winner was ICC's Men's basketball coach Jason Steadman. Steadman says he is proud to see what his players can accomplish.
The community award went to former Independence High School Band Director Don Farthing. Farthing says he was honored to receive the award.
The student award went to Tinevimbo Makurira. Makurira works on campus as a peer tutor, helping fellow students who need assistance with their classwork. ICC Student Life Manager Erica Cope called Makurira a natural leader with a bright future ahead of her.
Cope went on to say that all three individuals exemplify the values of Dr. King and that their selfless efforts can inspire everyone to strive for a more giving community.
