Contentious Bill in KS House Nearly Leads to Fight on House Floor

Lawmakers in the Kansas House of Representatives exchanged harsh words during the discussion of a bill over whether or not to implement the NRA program Eddie the Eagle in public elementary schools.

Topeka Democrat Virgil Weigel was at the podium questioning Dodge City Republican Jason Goetz when a commotion broke out on the House floor. Here is the audio of what happened. The original audio has been enhanced because the argument occurred away from the microphones.

House Democrats say Representative Nick Hoheisel, who is a Republican from Wichita, confronted Wichita Democrat Ford Carr at his desk. Another Wichita Democrat John Carmichael says he heard the argument.

Representative Kirk Haskins of Topeka called for a point of decorum that brought the debate to an end.

Representative Ron Bryce was on the floor of the House when the argument broke out. Bryce says those involved just let their tempers get the better of them.

Following the commotion, the House adjourned for two hours to give all involved some time to cool down. The lawmaking body then reconvened with no further incidents.
