Medical Professionals Issue Caution During Extreme Cold

The extreme cold temperatures and wind chills forecast over the next few days means taking extra precautions when spending time outside.

Dr. Ravi Johar of United Healthcare of Missouri reminds everyone to bundle up and keep your skin covered if you venture outside.

With the frigid temperatures comes the risk of hypothermia, which can occur when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it. Johar says if you plan to be outside, be aware of the warning signs that you are getting too cold.

Another factor to consider with the recent snowfall is over-exertion. For those planning to do some snow shoveling, Johar says you should be aware that exercise in cold weather can cause health problems.

Snow shoveling can cause increased heart strain and muscle injuries. People with existing heart conditions, Individuals with high blood pressure, Older adults, and People who are not regularly physically active should use caution
