The Girard Fire Department battles freezing conditions while fighting two structure fires.
The first incident happened around 2:30am yesterday, in the 400 block of W 650th Ave, where GFD, along with the Sherman Township Fire Department, assisted the District 4 Fire Department. Despite cold temperatures causing equipment issues like frozen hose lines and trucks, the collaborative efforts of all three departments successfully prevented the house from catching fire. Crews remained on scene until about 7:00am.
Shortly after, at around 7:30am, GFD was dispatched to another structure fire in the 700 block of North Summit. Given that many personnel had been active since the early morning hours and some equipment was not fully restocked, mutual aid was requested from Frontenac Fire and Arma District 2 Fire. The cold continued to pose challenges, including water supply issues and equipment freezing. Firefighters executed an aggressive transitional attack, quickly knocking down significant flames from the exterior before moving inside to extinguish the remaining fire in the room of origin and attic space. Sherman Township Fire was later called in to provide additional water supply. The scene was cleared by 1:41pm, with no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians.
