Intense Flu Season affecting Local Schools

This flu season appears to be one of the worst in nearly 15 years.

That's according to recently released numbers by the Centers for Disease Control. According to the CDC, last week saw the highest peak of doctor's office visits by people reporting flu-like symptoms since 2009. School children are often hit hard by the flu virus. Principal of Thayer Schools K through 8, Aaron Rehmert says they have seen a lot of students out sick this week.

Overall, 43 states have reported high or very high flu activity last week. The CDC reports that there have been at least 24 million flu illnesses so far this season, with more than 300,000 hospitalizations and 13,000 deaths, including 57 children. Dr Michael Garko says there are some things you can do to increase your chances of staying well.

Ways to keep your immune system strong include eating a balanced diet, washing your hands thoroughly, and getting adequate sleep. Flu shots can also reduce illness, doctor's visits, and missed work and school, while making symptoms less severe.
