The USD 447 Cherryvale-Thayer School Board says it needs more time to consider a proposal to switch all buildings in the district to LED lighting.
At last night's meeting, both Superintendent Travis Githens and Director of Maintenance
Marvin Hestand supported the proposal. Hestand says now is a good time to make the change.
However, Board member Robert John voiced his opposition to the measure that would spend nearly $300,000 to make the change in all of the district's buildings. John says he's concerned that the estimated energy savings from the move would not be enough to pay for the project.
After a lengthy discussion, the measure was tabled until next month's meeting to allow for more information to be gathered on the potential savings.
In other business, the Board also tabled the approval of new regulations from the Kansas Association of School Boards regarding how money earned through fundraising activities would be handled by the district. Board member Jonathan Booe wanted stronger language in the rules to ensure that all money would be directed to district-owned bank accounts.
Board members unanimously approved a measure that would move a possible replacement plan for the Cherryvale High School track from the proposal stage to the bidding stage of the four-stage process.
The next meeting of the USD 447 School Board will be on March 10th.
