A car accident in southwest Missouri leads to felony assault charges for a Lawrence County man.
The incident occurred just before 4pm on Wednesday when witnesses observed an Amazon driver veer off the roadway and crash into a field. The Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to the scene and found the female driver unresponsive. Doctors at Joplin's Mercy Hospital examined the woman and discovered she had a gunshot wound and that the bullet was lodged in her head.
Investigators were able to obtain a video from Amazon that showed the driver entering the driveway of a residence on Lawrence County Road 2152 before she suddenly collapsed while still behind the wheel. Officers contacted the resident at that location – a man identified as Thomas Coy. Coy then admitted that he had shot the driver with a pellet gun before approaching her vehicle after the crash. He then removed the victim from her vehicle and placed her in a roadside ditch. Coy was taken into custody and faces charges of felony assault and armed criminal action.
There is no word on the status of the victim.
