An armed standoff with Salina Police leads to the shooting of the suspect.
The incident began around 11:15 yesterday morning when Salina Police received reports of a domestic disturbance at a Salina residence. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the woman outside of her home where she told them that a male suspect identified as 29-year-old Manuel Johnson-Ponce had barricaded himself inside the house along with a three-year-old child. Ponce was making threats to both officers and the child.
During the standoff, Ponce refused to comply with repeated commands to come out of the house. He would also not allow the toddler to leave. Around 1 p.m. an officer from S-P-D fired several rounds striking Ponce. The child was then safely removed from the situation while Ponce was taken to a Salina hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
As in all cases involving a shooting by police, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the circumstances of the shooting. When the investigation is complete, the K-B-I will present its findings to the Saline County Attorney to determine what, if any, charges will be filed.
