Happy 164th Birthday, Kansas!

Today is Kansas Day and marks the day in 1861 that Kansas became the 34th state in the Union.

According to the Kansas Historical Society, the first Kansas Day was celebrated in 1877 in Paola, where public school students celebrated their pride in being Kansans. Students spent the day discussing and displaying information and facts about the state. The day was such a success that the celebration quickly spread throughout the rest of the state and by the early 1880s, it was a day all school children celebrated.

School children still mark the day with special activities like field trips, pioneer-style meals, and special projects to study the history of the state.

Governor Laura Kelly will mark the day by joining the Kansas Historical Society at the Capitol at noon today to unveil the new Women's Suffrage Mural
