OK AG Requests for Murderer to be Transferred from Federal Prison to OK

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond requests that a convicted murderer be transferred from a federal prison in Louisiana so that a death sentence can be carried out in Oklahoma.

60-year-old George John Hanson was convicted of murder of the August 1999 kidnapping and shooting death of 77-year-old Mary Bowles. Hanson kidnapped the woman from a Tulsa mall and took her to an isolated dirt pit near Owasso where he shot her. Hanson’s accomplice, Victor Miller, then killed Jerald Max Thurman, who was at the scene and witnessed the crime.

Hanson is currently serving a separate life sentence in federal prison for a bank robbery. He was scheduled for execution in Oklahoma on Dec. 15, 2022, but the Biden Administration had refused to transfer him. Earlier this week, President Trump issued and executive order reversing that policy.

In a latter to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Drummond called the prior administration's refusal to transfer Hanson to Oklahoma the epitome of subverting and obstructing a capital sentence.
