Agents from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are looking into an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday evening in Atchison.
Just before 6pm on Friday night, Atchison Police were called to a local apartment complex in regards to a person with a gun. A second call reported a suspect attempting to break into an apartment. When the first officer arrived on the scene and got out of his car, someone shot at him, striking his cruiser multiple times. The suspect – later identified as 36-year-old Bryson McCray of St. Joseph, MO – then fled into a residence, where he proceeded to hold a woman as a hostage. A standoff ensued as officers tried to negotiate the release of the hostage.
Around 2:30 Saturday morning, police attempted to rescue the hostage. During the rescue attempt, a trooper from the Kansas Highway Patrol fired at McCray, striking him. The hostage was safely rescued and McCray was taken to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition.
No officers were injured.
When the KBI finishes its investigation into the incident, the findings will be sent to the Atchison County Attorney's Office.
