Independence Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

The City of Independence celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr at the Memorial Community Celebration.

That was the sound of students from Eisenhower Elementary that greeted community members as they gathered at Independence High School on Sunday afternoon to remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and to celebrate his legacy. The Master of Ceremonies for the event was Pastor Mike Rose of Berean Christian Mission in Independence. The afternoon was filled with musical acts, speakers, and poetry. Pastor Anthony Turner of True Vine Baptist Church says it is important to remember that King was not only “Dr. King,” but “Reverend King.”

USD 446 Superintendent Jason McAfee also welcomed the crowd with words of tribute to King's legacy.

The keynote speaker was the Director of the Kansas African American Museum in Wichita Amy Williams who spoke highly of King's lasting impact on the country and the world.

Another highlight of the celebration was the presentation of the 2025 Spirit of Unity Award. This year's recipient was Ray Woods. Independence Chamber President Lisa Wilson says Woods' commitment to kindness and community touched everyone he met.

Woods' grandsons Tommy and Kyle Woods accepted the award on behalf of their grandfather.

The Independence MLK Memorial Community Celebration was presented by the Independence Diversity Task Force, The Kansas Volunteer Commission, and RSVP Four County.
