The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Topeka over the weekend.
A Topeka Police Officer shot 37-year-old Joseph Pham-Gardner on Friday night after the suspect fled on a bicycle. The officer chased Pham-Gardner and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the suspect threatened to shoot the officer. The officer opened fire, striking Pham-Gardner several times. The suspect was taken to a Kansas City hospital and is recovering from non-life-threatening wounds.
When KBI agents conclude this investigation, case findings will be presented to the Shawnee County District Attorney for determination of charges. The investigation is ongoing.
