Montgomery County Offers Assistance with Senior Property Tax Refund

The Montgomery County Clerk's Office is now available to assist citizens in processing the Homestead/Safe Senior Property Tax Refund for Low-Income Seniors and Senior Disabled VeteranS.

Assistance will be available in the Clerk's Office in the Montgomery County Courthouse in Independence beginning today/yesterday, Monday through Friday from 8 to 5. In order to qualify, citizens must be the homeowner and must be listed on the deed. Renters do not qualify. In order to qualify for the Food Sales Tax Credit, you must file a Federal Income Tax return.

In order to receive assistance, there are also several pieces of information you must have with you when you come in for help.

Here is a list of all paperwork you MUST have with you:

SRS: Food Stamp payments for all of 2024; Cash Assistant payments for all of 2024

Social Security (1099): Benefit Verification that includes your "Date of Disability Onset" (if receiving disability payments); Income letter for all of 2024; 1099 (Interest and Income)

Children: Birthdates and Social Security numbers

Homeowners: Statement for 2024 PropertyTaxes - Applicants name must be on deed

Income:  All income for any household member over the age of 18 -- If you file a Federal or State income tax return, you must have your tax preparer complete your homestead as well. County Clerk's Office will no longer be able to calculate the homestead on citizens who file a Federal and/or State income tax.

Claim will not be processed unless you provide all of the above paperwork.
