Kansas Legislature Begins New Session Today

Kansas lawmakers are back to work today.

State lawmakers are back in Topeka today to begin the new session of the Kansas Legislature. Lawmakers will be sworn in today and debate on new bills and other important issues will begin. Republicans in the state law-making body will have a strong majority this session having picked up three seats each in the House and Senate in the November elections. That majority will give Republicans a better chance of overriding any vetoes by Democratic Governor Laura Kelly. District 12 Representative Doug Blex of Independence says one of his priorities for the new session is a bill dedicated to conservation funding for Kansas.

Blex sits on both the House Committee for Agriculture and Natural Resources as well as the Health and human Services Committee. Blex says he also supports reform for reimbursements for pharmacies.

The 2025 legislative session will begin today at 2pm. Governor Kelly will deliver her State of the State address on Wednesday and her office is expected to release her budget recommendations on Thursday.
