Those traveling through central Kansas during the snowy weather may notice some unusual colors in the slush along Kansas highways.

That's because the Kansas Department of Transportation has been using beet juice to treat the icy roads in certain places. Crews have been using beet juice mixed with brine since Monday night to help treat snow and ice-covered roads. The unusual mixture helps control ice when temperatures drop into the single digits and also helps the mixture adhere to the pavement longer, making the mix more effective. It also allows roads to stay slushy longer, giving snow plow crews time to remove the snow.
