Many residents in Independence awoke early Sunday morning to find themselves without power.
The outage occurred around 3am Sunday morning south of the City of Independence. The outage affected customers near Independence Community College in Woodland View, on 58 Road and extended further south into the State Lake area. Residents across the four-state area have been on alert as the first winter storm of the year moved over the Midwest. However, sources indicate that this particular outage may have been caused by a downed power line. Evergy crews had power restored shortly before 5am.
Evergy has stated that in winter conditions, restoration times may be delayed as it takes much longer for the crews to get to the outage locations due to the road conditions and poor visibility. Crews are taking safety precautions and using safety equipment to avoid frostbite as the temperature drops. The power company adds that they prioritize outages to get the greatest number of customers on first.
Power outages can be reported to Evergy online or by calling 1-800-544-4857
