Kansas grocery shoppers will see the sales tax on certain items at the grocery store disappear tomorrow.
Starting on January 1, 2025, the sales tax on some food items will go to zero. This is part of an ongoing tax plan signed in 2023 by Governor Laura Kelly that has seen the tax gradually drop from 6.5% to zero.
The Kansas Department of Revenue says the reduction applies to “food and food ingredients, and certain prepared food.” This includes foods such as eggs, bread, and fresh fruit. Non-food items will still be sold with a 6.5% sales tax.
This change only applies to state sales tax. Local city and county sales tax will still be applied.
