The City of Miami, OK, and the Miami Police Department report an officer-involved shooting on Friday afternoon.
According to Interim Police Chief Todd Hicks, just before 4pm Friday, officers responded to emergency calls of an armed man under the influence attempting to break into an apartment at a Miami complex on C SE Street.
Three M-P-D officers made contact with 49-year-old Jason Wilkins who was armed with a large metal spike and who appeared to be under the influence of narcotics. Wilkins failed to respond to commands from the officers to drop his weapon. When Wilkins refused to comply, shots were fired and the suspect was hit. The suspect was taken to Integris Hospital in Miami where he later died from his injuries.
The Ottawa County District Attorney was notified, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has been called in for further investigation.
