The Kansas Highway Patrol releases Christmas holiday crash data.
K-H-P data for the Christmas holiday suggests fewer traffic infractions compared to the previous two years. During the reporting period from 6pm on Christmas Eve through midnight Christmas Day, there was only one fatal car accident on Kansas highways compared to 4 last year and 2 in 2022. that accident occurred on Christmas morning in Doniphan County in the northeast corner of the state.
Troopers also issued 227 speeding tickets, which is 50 fewer than last year and nearly half the number of tickets issued in 2022.
K-H-P also provided assistance to 218 motorists over the holiday.
The K-H-P along with local law enforcement will continue the New Year's Taking Down DUI campaign through January 2nd. Troopers, along with the Galena Police Department will be conducting a sobriety check-point in Cherokee County on New Year's Eve. About 10,000 persons are killed each year in alcohol-related traffic crashes, averaging one alcohol-related fatality every 50 minutes. These deaths constitute approximately 29% of the total traffic fatalities. Law enforcement reminds Kansans planning to celebrate 2025 with alcohol to plan ahead and ensure a ride home with a sober driver.
