Independence Continues Efforts to Reduce Unsafe Houses in City

The City of Independence continues to combat dangerous and unsafe houses in the city.

At last night's city commission meeting, another 11 houses in the city were examined to determine if their owners were willing to repair them. City Manager Kelly Passauer says the purpose of abatement is to repair and save unsafe buildings while removing those that continue in disrepair.

Those who have opted to repair their properties will be asked to update the commission on their progress in June.

In other business, City Engineer John Garris updated commissioners on current and upcoming public works projects. Garris says the work on East Main Street is nearly complete.

There will be a similar project on North 10th Street from Main to Laurel slated to begin in 2025.
