Ark City Water Treatment Plant Returns to Regular Operations After Cyberattack

The water treatment plant in Arkansas City is back to its regular operations following a cyberattack on the facility in September.

The water treatment facility was the victim of a ransomware attack earlier this year that caused a temporary disruption to the system. Thanks to back up systems and manual controls , there was no disruption of service to customer.

After city officials were notified that the issue was caused by a cyber attack, they contacted Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI. An investigation by those two federal agencies determined that no sensitive information was accessed or stolen.

The attack required some repairs and upgrades for equipment in the treatment plant. Those costs combined with the cost of investigating the issue will cost Arkansas City nearly $175,000. Fortunately, insurance will cover most of that expense, save for a $10,000 deductible.
