KDWP Seeks Answers Over Poached Elk

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks wants to know who killed an elk in Pawnee County.

Authorities recovered the decapitated head of an elk in a culvert southwest of the city of Rozel over the weekend. While elk hunting is allowed in Kansas, it often only occurs in the area around Fort Riley. The state receives more than 900 applications for elk permits a year, while only issuing 20 to 30.

A local game warden says the head belongs to an elk recently seen in the Rozel area. Anyone with information on what happened to the animal is asked to contact the K-D-W-P.
