The U.S. Department of Energy cancels plans to establish an energy transmission corridor in Kansas.
The move comes just days after the federal government canceled a similar project slated for Oklahoma. The reason for the cancellation is opposition from landowners along the proposed route and the Kansas Congressional Delegation.
Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall and Congressman Ron Estes stated they had heard concerns from Kansans about the possible seizure of private property along the proposed route for the National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor or NIETC.
Moran called the cancellation great news for farmers and ranchers, while Estes called the original plan a flawed proposal that showed disregard for private property rights. Estes sent a letter to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm voicing his opposition to the project in August.
