The Caney Community Betterment Group asks Montgomery County for a share of tourism dollars.
Group President Jared Daniels spoke before the Montgomery County Commission to ask commissioners to direct Caney's share of county tourism money to their group. Currently, the county's four cities split tourism funding between them. Caney does not currently have a Chamber of Commerce, so their share of the money goes to the city. Daniels says this makes things complicated when it comes to using the money.
Caney and Cherryvale each receive 5% of county tourism funds, while Independence and Coffeyville each get 45%. That funding goes to the Chambers of Commerce in all of those cities except Caney. Daniels says his group is asking for that money to be sent to the Caney Betterment Group because they are functioning as the city's Chamber.
Commissioners agreed to the proposal but said they would need a letter from the City of Caney showing its support for the group in order to re-direct the money.
