Cherokee Nation Approves Motor Vehicle Compact With State of Oklahoma

The Council of the Cherokee Nation approves extending its motor vehicle compact with the State of Oklahoma.

The approval comes after months of negotiations between the two entities. The compact means the Cherokee Nation will continue to issue tags for both in-reservation and at-large Cherokee citizens.

Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation Chuck Hoskin Jr. stated that he was pleased that the state recognized the benefits for both parties to continue the collaboration.

Since 2002, the compact has generated nearly $258 million in funding for services such as public schools, roads, and law enforcement. The new compact will take effect on January 1st and will last for a term of ten years.
