The Independence High School and Middle School Chess Clubs are holding a holiday House or Yard decorating contest fundraiser.
Entries are open to residents of the City of Independence, with cash prizes for the top three winners. Judging will be done by chess club members on December 15 and December 19 between 6 and 9pm. There is a $25 entry fee.
The Chess Club currently has 17 high school members and 4 middle school members. Students get together once a week to play chess, learn new moves, and challenge each other. Some students plan to participate in the K-S-C-A Chess Tournaments in southeast Kansas, and are working towards going to the Kansas State Chess Tournament in Emporia in March 2025. This fundraiser is to help pay for entry fees for tournaments.
