The Kansas Department of Transportation is encouraging drivers to take part in Older Driver Safety Awareness Week.
KDOT says older drivers can face a variety of unique concerns related to aging and declining health. Vision concerns, reflexes, and physical fitness can affect a driver's ability to react during traffic situations and can also mean a longer recovery time in the event of physical injuries caused by an accident.
Eighty-seven drivers aged 65 and over were involved in a fatal crash in 2023 and nearly four thousand individuals in that age group were injured in a crash last year.
KDOT urges all Kansans to understand their performance and their ability to drive safely.
