The Kansas Highway Patrol reports only one fatal accident over the long holiday weekend.
K-H-P says the fatal accident occurred in Nemaha County in northeast Kansas along the Nebraska border. The accident occurred when one of the drivers ran a stop sign and struck another vehicle broadside, claiming the life of 35-year-old William Novotny of Lawrence and injuring three others. Alcohol was not involved.
K-H-P also reports a decrease in D-U-I arrests compared to last year. That number fell from 18 to 13. Seat belt citations were more than double those of a year ago due to a campaign to emphasize their use. Troopers also cited more than one thousand drivers for speeding and assisted more than eight hundred motorists between Wednesday evening and Sunday night.
