The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is asking Kansas lawmakers to fund a new facility for the state's top police agency.
The headquarters for the KBI are currently located in Topeka, a former junior high school building. KBI Director Tony Mattivi says the current building lacks space for necessities such as an evidence processing room, kennels for K-9 officers, or equipment lockers. He adds that the building also does not meet several federal safety and security requirements.
The KBI is asking the Kansas Legislature to approve nearly $100 million to build a new facility. There is also a separate request for $1 million for cybersecurity upgrades at the agency.
