Independence Commission Votes to Reduce Required Number of Monthly Meetings

The Independence City Commission approves a new city ordinance that would reduce the minimum number of monthly meetings from two to one.

At last night's commission meeting, the measure was approved by a unanimous vote. Commissioner Dean Hayse says it's a good move going forward.

Mayor Tim Emert says the City Commission still plans to schedule two meetings per month because they have the option of not holding the second meeting of the month.

In other business, commissioners voted to hold a Public Hearing for the abatement of a house at 713 Washington Street on January 23rd. Assistant City Manager David Cowan told commissioners that the interior of the house had been destroyed by squatters.

Commissioners also approved a measure that would allow city employees to attend classes at ICC at no cost. The agreement between the city and the school is based on a similar deal between Labette Community College and the City of Parsons. The purpose of the arrangement is to allow the city to offer the classes as an additional benefit to prospective city employees.

The next Independence City Commission meeting will be held next Thursday, November 21, due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
