Cherryvale Schools Seeks Oversight on Fundraisers

USD 447 Cherryvale seeks to improve district oversight on athletic and activities fundraisers and donations.

At this week's USD 447 School Board meeting, Board member Jonathan Booe asked the question “When school groups raise money for that organization or activity, where does that money go?” Superintendent Travis Githens says, most of it goes through the district's accounts.

Githens stressed that no mishandling of funds is suspected. Athletic Director Kandra Smith added that a lot of those funds go to pay for things the school district is not allowed to pay for, such as camps or personalized gear. Smith says the district does need to provide more oversight for accounting reasons.

Board members agreed that the schools needed to provide more oversight on the outside accounts for the reason that the handling of those funds might look bad.
