The City of Independence celebrates veterans over the weekend during its 8th Annual Veterans Day of Honor.
Festivities kicked off early Saturday morning in downtown Independence. Events included a veterans breakfast at VFW Post #11-86, a patriotic rock hunt, and a car show. The afternoon was capped off with the Veterans Day Parade.
In addition to the downtown activities was the Memorial Tribute that took place at Veterans Freedom Square at Riverside Park. The tribute began with a welcome to those in attendance.
The opening welcome was followed by a reading of the names on the Veterans Memorial. The event concluded with the Fallen Soldier Cross Presentation.
Cherryvale also held their Veterans Day Parade today. The event was followed by a lunch at the Cherryvale Community Center. Local sixth grade students performed a special program during the lunch.
Coffeyville will honor its veterans today at 11am at the American Legion, located at 811 West 12th Street. The Program will feature keynote speaker Dr. Bill Lyons of Oral Roberts University.
Veterans Day flags are up today at Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville. They will need volunteers to help take them down this afternoon. If you or your organization would like to help, they will start taking down flags at 4pm.
