KBI Investigates Juvenile Death at State Detention Center

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of a juvenile at the Northeast Kansas Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City.

The KBI was called in on Tuesday to investigate the death of a 17-year-old boy from Dodge City.  The teen had been at the detention facility since early August as a result of a child in need of care case.  Detention Center personnel found the boy unresponsive just before 7am Tuesday and began life-saving measures. Geary County EMS arrived on the scene and continued efforts to resuscitate the boy while en route to an area hospital. However, the boy was pronounced dead around 7:40am. An autopsy has been scheduled.

By statute, the KBI investigates the deaths of prisoners in the custody of Kansas jails and prisons, and juveniles in state, county, or city custody, unless the person who dies is being regularly attended by a physician, or the death is ruled natural by autopsy.

The investigation is ongoing.
