Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond urges Oklahoma residents to watch out for contractor fraud in the wake of last weekend’s severe weather.
Drummond says the weeks following damaging storms and tornadoes are a common time for property owners to fall victim to frauds.
Six counties have been declared a State of Emergency, and agents from the Office of the Attorney General will be in those areas posting notices and educating residents on avoiding scams.
Some tips on avoiding contractor fraud are to ask for referrals from people you know and trust, interview several contractors and take the time to carefully review your options. Obtain written proposals that accurately cover all aspects of your project, and use caution if asked for a substantial up-front payment or cash payment.
To file a complaint against a contractor, call the Office of the Oklahoma Attorney General Consumer Protection Unit at 1-833-681-1895.
