Oklahoma Department of Corrections Makes Progress in Reducing Inmate Violence

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections announces a significant reduction in inmate-on-inmate violence in the state's prison system.

The O-D-O-C says there has been an overall 14% reduction in inmate assaults this year as compared to 2023 with a decrease of 52% in May and 45% in March. Corrections officials credit this drop to efforts to enhance safety and security through strategic population management, stricter enforcement policies, and the use of new technology.

O-D-O-C Executive Director Steven Harpe says that stricter penalties for the most serious offenses and dangerous behaviors has helped to make the prison environment safer for both inmates and staff.
