A Wichita man is sentenced to 65 years in prison for the 2020 murders of his girlfriend and her 8-year-old daughter.
29-year-old Daniel Lopez was sentenced yesterday for the deaths of 24-year-old Mickayla Sorell and her daughter Natalya in March 2020. The two were found shot to death in a residence following a welfare check by police.
Lopez was named as a suspect the following day and arrested on April 10. He was initially charged with capital murder, but in June he entered a guilty plea to one charge of first-degree murder and one charge of second-degree murder.
The judge in the case sentenced Lopez to life in prison with parole eligibility after 50 years for the first-degree murder charge and 15 years for the second-degree murder charge. The sentences will run consecutively. Lopez must also pay $5,000 in restitution to the families for funeral expenses.
