Wichita Man Sentenced to Prison After Using Obituaries to Commit Crimes

A Wichita man is headed to prison after being convicted of using obituaries to burglarize the families of the deceased.

According to prosecutors, 50-year-old Gary Garrett would scour online obituaries to learn about funeral time and then planned ways to steal from those homes while the families were at the funeral. Victims lost financial documents, guns, and electronics among other items stolen in the residential burglaries.

Garrett convicted by a jury in August. A District Court judge sentenced Garrett to more than 16 years in prison Thursday for his crimes.
