Independence Passes New Camping Ordinance After Citizen Complaints

The Independence City Commission holds its regular meeting at a different time due to Neewollah.

Commissioners made quick work of a full agenda at Wednesday night's meeting, including the passage of several new ordinances. Among those was an ordinance to regulate camping within the city limits. Assistant City Manager David Cowan says the city has been receiving complaints about people camping on public and private property in the downtown district.

Mayor Tim Emert asked what constituted camping and if the term was defined in the proposed ordinance. City Attorney Jeff Chubb says the measure clearly spells out what is and is not allowed.

The ordinance passed unanimously. Other ordinances passed at last night's meeting include changes to the zoning code to allow a communication antenna to be installed and a rezoning of a business area to residential.

The commission also authorized four parking spaces in front of the CRMC clinic on West Myrtle to be two-hour parking and approved two murals to be painted on the walls of Shulthis Stadium. The dates for public hearing for the condemnation of several houses in the city were also set for December and January.
