The recent death of an inmate at the El Dorado Correctional Facility is ruled a homicide.

 

 The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Kansas Department of Corrections are investigating the death of 40-year-old inmate Brooks Vonthaer. Vonthaer was found unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday afternoon. Staff attempted live-saving measures, but Vonthaer was pronounced dead. Shortly after he died, correctional facility staff notified the KBI that his death was suspicious. Agents from the KBI say Vonthaer died from multiple fatal injuries.

 

A 34-year-old male suspect has been identified. He is an inmate at the facility and was Vonthaer's cellmate.

 

The investigation is ongoing. Once it is completed, findings will be presented to the Butler County Attorney’s Office for determination of charges. At this time, charges are pending.
