A man convicted in the 2005 killing of a Kansas sheriff is asking for a new trial.
A bench trial is underway this week for Scott Cheever who was convicted of killing Greenwood County Sheriff Matthew Samuels in January 2005 in Hilltop, KS. Cheever is currently seeking relief for claims of ineffective counsel in his original trial. He was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in 2007. He also received a 58-year prison sentence for manufacturing methamphetamine in the case. Cheever has been through a number of appeals since his conviction, including a 2016 appeal that reached the Kansas Supreme Court in which his death sentence was upheld.
The bench trial is expected to last through the end of this week.
