Deputy Burned Following Crash After a Chase

A Barton County Sheriff's Deputy is injured following a traffic stop that turned into a chase.

The incident began around 4pm on Sunday when the deputy attempted to make a traffic stop on a motorcycle without a license plate on a rural road southwest of Great Bend. The motorcyclist refused to stop and a chase began, continuing southwest into Pawnee County. After a 12-mile chase, the motorcyclist drove into a pasture where he lost control of the bike. While the Barton County Deputy attempted to subdue the suspect with the help of a Pawnee County Deputy, one of the deputies' vehicles set the field on fire.

After some resistance, the two deputies handcuffed the suspect and took him into custody.

The Pawnee County Deputy suffered second-degree burns and was taken to a Wichita hospital, where is expected to make a full recovery.
