An inmate at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility is found unresponsive in his cell.
Prison officials say 26-year-old Kevyn Lopez was found in his cell yesterday morning and was unresponsive. Staff attempted life-saving measures and contacted emergency medical personnel, but attempts to revive Lopez were unsuccessful. The cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation along with the Kansas Department of Corrections are investigating the death.
Lopez was serving an 8-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter in Wyandotte County. He entered a guilty plea to the charge in May 2021.
The Hutchinson Correctional Facility is the third largest such facility in the state and has a capacity of nearly 1,800 inmates.
