A weekend accident near Baxter Springs claims the life of a Columbus man.
The accident happened just before 4 on Saturday afternoon just north of US-166 at the intersection of Southeast 20th Street and Southeast Greenlawn Road or about 7 miles northwest of Baxter Springs.
A 2018 Ford Explorer driven by 35-year-old Maryann Atkinson was traveling westbound of Southeast Greenlawn Road. Atkinson failed to yield at a stop sign while crossing Southeast 20th Street. Her vehicle was struck by a northbound 1996 Ford van driven by 37-year-old Charla King. A passenger in the Explorer 36-year-old Matthew Atkinson was killed in the accident. Maryann Atkinson was seriously injured and taken to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin. King, along with four juveniles in her vehicle, received minor injuries in the crash.
