KHP Urges Motorists to Use Caution During Peak Deer Season

This time of year marks the time that vehicle-deer collisions tend to increase and the Kansas Highway Patrol urges drivers to use extra caution on Kansas roadways.

Deer breeding season means deer on the move, especially at dawn and dusk. Shawn Steward with Triple A-Kansas says deer just often are not paying attention.

In 2023, there were more than ten thousand vehicle-deer accidents in Kansas. Of those, more than 600 involved injuries and seven were fatal. Steward says drivers should stay vigilant near deer crossings, wooded areas and other green spaces where deer hang out. If you see one deer, there are likely more nearby. Always wear your seat belt to reduce the risk of injuries or worse if you do happen to hit a deer.
