The hot, dry weather of August in southeast Kansas often leads to the shifting of soil underground.

 Those changes in the earth can lead to twisting of underground pipes, which is why water leaks are frequent at this time of year. The City of Altamont has been busy looking for leaky pipes in the city water system. City Administrator LeeAnn Myers says sometimes things that look like water leaks aren't really leaks after all.
